Campbeltown To Machrihanish - 9km (5.5 miles)
Public Highway
This section follows the B842 and B843 roads for most of its length. Rather than walking it is possible to take the local bus from Campbeltown to Machrihanish.
The route leaves Campbeltown and heads towards the small settlement of Stewarton where the B842 turns off for Southend. Up and to the left is Beinn Ghuilean (362m), a popular local walk and fine viewpoint. The climb is well worth the effort if you have half a day to spare.
Near Stewarton you can still find traces of the embankment for the Campbeltown Coal Canal. The canal was 5km long and was built in the late 18th century to carry coal mined at Drumlemble.
The flat land around here is known as The Laggan and is another notable wintering ground for geese.
As the road bends right at Drumlemble, look left and you will see the knoll known as Cnocan a ‘Chluig. A standing stone and bronze age burial cairns are to be found there. A little further on to the left is Kilkivan Old Church, 13th century in origin and dedicated to St Kevin.
Over to the right is Machrihanish Airfield with its twice daily direct flights to Glasgow.
After the road enters Machrihanish village it is worth diverting right to see the superb 5km stretch of sandy beach. There is also the world famous 18 hole championship golf course here. There is also a good selection of accommodation in Machrihanish before your final section of the way.
