Tarbert To Claonaig Map

Tarbert to Claonaig - 18km (11 Miles)
Footpath, forestry track and minor road

The walk starts in the village of Tarbert, Loch Fyne. This bustling fishing port is very popular with visiting yachts and each summer it hosts major sailing events, music and seafood festivals.  The harbour is a fascinating place to visit and a great start to the walk.

The route starts by climbing to the ruin of Tarbert Castle, a once powerful stronghold dating back to the 13th century; set in a commanding position above the town it has a clear view of the all-important seaways.

The path continues to climb, entering mixed forestry then levels out to cross moorland. There are superb views across the Kilbrannan Sound to Arran and back up Loch Fyne. Trees include ash, birch, elm, hazel, rowan, and willow as well as spruce and pine. Wildlife you are likely to see include several types of deer, red squirrels, grouse and hen harriers.

After passing the high point of Cruach Doire Leithe at 370m, the path starts a long descent to Skipness passing the remains of old sheilings (small temporary huts used by shepherds in summer) at Glenskible. The final section runs beside the fast-flowing Skipness River.

From the village of Skipness it is a short and very worthwhile diversion to the massive ruin of Skipness Castle. Like Tarbert Castle the earliest parts date back to the 13th century. Close to the castle is the 14th century Kilbrannan Chapel, dedicated to St Brendan, the Irish missionary who was himself a great traveller.

From Skipness the walk continues along the B8001 following the shore to the ferry pier at Claonaig. You are quite likely to see seals and  diving gannets on this section  with a chance of otters, basking sharks and even dolphins.

This section of the walk ends at the ferry pier at Claonaig. There are currently no facilities here, but there is an infrequent local bus service back to Tarbert (see transport section).
